Since moving to Hungary, our friends have told us about the most romantic little weekend getaway at this lake in our neighbor country. After many positive reviews we finally took the time away and made the short trip. It was a perfect spot for a long weekend getaway.
Lake Bled, Slovenia, is only a quick 4 hour drive from us so we couldn't believe it had taken a year for us to get there! However, with the longest-lasting winter ever and continuous snowfall, our drive took us a lot longer than we expected. Also to note- don't let the snow fool you! This was actually our spring break trip!
We stayed right on the lake in a wonderful hotel, RB's favorite. He's a big fan of that #suitelife. We spent our two days taking an enjoyable walk around the lake, stopping many times for photo ops.
We weren't able to take a little boat to the island to see the church, but we were just fine managing to take photos of every angle on the outside. Chris was very happy about a few of his shots somehow having a bird fly perfectly into the frame.
One morning we took the hike up to the castle for the view of the lake. It was under construction at this time so it wasn't showing it's good side for photos. Here's RB at the gate instead! We weren't allowed in with our 4 legged baby, so we mainly did the hike up for our morning exercise. (We discovered a parking lot and realized we could have driven up, but nevermind that- the work was already done at that point.) We had eaten so many delicious meals already- and heard about Bled Cake which we had to have for an afternoon snack. Balance, right?
After our scrumptious afternoon snack and some shopping for local honey, we drove over to Vintgar Gorge. We also heard it's a must do while at Bled, and it was only 15 minutes away. We had to check it out!
I love it when we're the only people to visit these "must do" sites. RB does too! Our little mountain man was having the time of his life jumping into snow piles and trotting along the waterside paths. Unfortunately there was a small downside to visiting off season, the path was closed after only a few minutes' walk. It seemed reasonable given the size of the icicles!
RB enjoyed a very refreshing (read: cold!) dip in the clear water and was ready to head back. Okay, bud. Follow the leader!
Our last stop before heading home was to hike to the viewpoint. What a rewarding view!
This is my tour guide. He told us which wines to try and what to order for dinner. He even told a few jokes! He was beary funny. Haha, get it? We were dining at Oštarija Peglez’n before heading off to test our luck at the casino! The restaurant was quaint and warm and cozy. With a glass (or three?) of wine, it was the perfect contrast to the chill outside. The food was delicious and one of the best we've had in awhile! Add it to your must-do list! Because it is small, call ahead if you can.
As the weather starts to cool down, I hope you stay warm and continue to adventure on!
